    Many Ways to Give

We believe that giving is an incredibly personal experience – and that’s why people choose to give in so many different ways. But deciding how to give can also be an overwhelming experience. We’ve compiled some of the most common ways that people choose to support refugees and the American Refugee Committee. Please use the information provided as a guide but know that at the American Refugee Committee we remain open to new and different ways of giving.

Boosting a female entrepreneur, working against the odds

    Day 144

    Meet Ahlam

Changemakers 365 is all about doing the doable. It’s about opening our eyes to the opportunities to make an impact in a person’s life with relatively few resources – and making change each and every day of the year.

There are not many women-owned businesses in Zaatari camp. So we knew when we met Ahlam today, that she was special.

Ahlam started making medicinal and perfumed soaps as a hobby two years ago. Initially, she was just looking for something to keep her busy and provide a little pocket money. Now, she is one of the most sought-after soap-makers, selling her soaps in markets in Amman, and even teaching others her craft.

She used to receive supplies from a community organization, but they stopped distributing supplies in January. She needed the supplies to begin her business over again.

Today, we surprised Ahlam with new soap making supplies and molds!

“She had tears in her eyes – she was so touched,” said Manar from our team.

And Ahlam herself was screaming in excitement when she saw one particular item. “I’ve been looking for these soap molds!” she said.

Being a business owner has its challenges, especially as a woman in Za’atari. But Ahlam meets those challenges head on. “As women we have to stay strong and assert ourselves,” she said. “I persevere through my challenges and am motivated by the women I work alongside.”

Stay tuned tomorrow to hear more from Ahlam!
